"The dogmas of the quiet past, are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew and act anew. We must disenthrall ourselves, and then we shall save our country."

-Abraham Lincoln: Annual Message to Congress, December 1st, 1862

  1. Although technology can really help students to learn, there will always need to be the human factor involved in teaching. Computers should be used as a powerful resource and not a substitute.

  2. Thanks, Michael. You piqued my interest yesterday with your comment about how we need to teach kids proper ways to interact with technology, just as adults need to know the etiquette of our phones, computers, etc. Your blog continues on this theme. I feel like it is what I have been trying to come up with all year but haven't had someone put it into words. Rather than fighting technology, let's learn to use it with a set of guidelines attached. I spoke to a woman the other day when dropping my son off for camp, and she happens to be a blogger who writes about issues of children and technology. I asked for some pointers and her first comment was, we wouldn't give a kid a car without getting a license, so why would be give them a phone without giving them the knowledge of how to use it safely and properly. This all ties in with a lot of what I am feeling about technology--the draw of it and the dangers of it, In short, if you have any good ideas for professional development training around this issue I would love to know and would recommend to our admin at LOHS. Thanks.
